It’s the only airport located in a National Park
When you fly in or out of Jackson Hole, you better be sure to get a window seat, because the view of the beautiful Wyoming terrain makes for a stunning first impression and a lasting bon voyage.
As planes approach the runway, they cruise along the jagged peaks of the Grand Tetons. What a thrilling introduction to the area, and with downtown Jackson only about 20 minutes away from the airport, you’ll be in the thick of your vacation moments after the airplane landing gear touches the ground.
Fly Into a National Park!
The Jackson Hole Airport is the only commercial airport in the United States situated entirely inside a National Park. Located at the base of the spectacular Tetons, flying into the Jackson Hole Airport is an awe-inspiring experience. Look closely and you might just spot some bison or elk in the distance.
The airport was created in the 1930s when it was determined to be the best place to put an airport in Teton County, Wyoming. It was declared a national monument in 1943 and merged with Grand Teton National Park in 1950.
Once upon a time, the airport had an unusual terminal resembling a pioneer log cabin. Today, the Airport continues to make both airside and landside improvements, with a focus on supporting the local community, protecting the environment, and working collaboratively with Teton County, the Town of Jackson, and Grand Teton National Park.
Just a heads up, the Jackson Hole Airport will be CLOSED in the spring of 2022 from April through June for improvements. However, everything else in the area will still be open so don’t let that deter you from coming. You can fly into the Idaho Falls airport (approximately 2 hour drive) or the Salt Lake City Airport (approximately 4.5 hour drive). Both are very pretty drives with lots to see along the way, so it’s all part of the adventure.
Saying Howdy with Mimosas & More
The airport’s terminal is a beautiful timber and stone structure featuring huge, sun-filled windows that frame a spectacular westward view of the Tetons. The building blends in with its unique surroundings and features exposed wood, fireplaces, and nature photography throughout. On top of that, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. every Saturday and Sunday during ski season., the Jackson Hole Chamber of Commerce welcomes arriving travelers with complimentary mimosas or orange juice. With a “howdy” and a western-laced welcome, flying into this airport is an awe-inspiring start to your vacation in Jackson Hole.
